 Hermanus

This charming coastal town is the most famous whale watching spot in South Africa. It even has a “whale crier” who alerts visitors when whales are nearby!

What I loved: Standing on the cliff path, coffee in hand, and watching a mother and calf just meters away.

The Garden Route

From Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay, this scenic route offers boat tours and lookout points. Plett has some of the most beautiful ocean views I’ve ever seen.

De Hoop Nature Reserve

A quieter, less touristy spot. If you love nature and walking, this is a peaceful place to see whales from land.

False Bay and Cape Town

Whales are often spotted around Simon’s Town, Muizenberg, and Kalk Bay. Perfect if you’re already in Cape Town. The scenic backdrop of the mountains makes for a perfect day out.

My Experience

I went whale watching in Hermanus last October. I didn’t book a tour,  just walked the cliff path early in the morning. The sun was rising. I sat on a bench, and suddenly, a huge shape appeared in the water. It was a Southern Right Whale.

It moved slowly, like it didn’t have a care in the world. Then a smaller whale,  probably her calf, surfaced beside her. It was calm, quiet, and completely unforgettable.

Later that day, I joined a boat tour in Gansbaai. Seeing the whales up close was thrilling. But I’ll be honest, the land-based viewing was just as good.
